Need a 7.5 Tonne Drivers Licence?

Are you thinking of training to become an ambulance driver for a living? Or perhaps you own a large motorhome and are wondering if you can drive it on a car licence? The answer to both of these is that you need what is commonly known as a C1 licence and for this, you need specialist training.

The good news is that here we can provide all of the driver training, instruction and tests that you require to get you on the road and driving anything between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes safely and legally.

If you want to know more about the legal requirements for different types of licences take a look at our licence section or call us to talk to one of our experts who can tell you exactly what you need to do for your particular driving requirements.

Who is the training for?

So, who would need this type of licence? Basically if you are a leisure driver but you regularly drive a large self-contained horsebox, which weighs between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, or perhaps a large motorhome of the same weight, then you will need to undertake this specialist driving instruction and add the C1 category to your licence to be legally compliant.

On a professional basis, if you want to become a delivery driver with a large van, or you want to start a home removal business, then you would need to undertake this particular driving training course.

It’s also a requirement if you are planning to train to become an ambulance driver, so gaining a C1 licence really will open up some professional doors for you and allow you to start a whole new career driving larger vehicles.

What is involved?

You will need to undertake a five-day instructional course with us and then pass the driving test at the end successfully. If you pass then your current car licence can be upgraded to include the new C1 category, allowing you to legally drive anything (non-passenger carrying) up to 7.5 tonnes.

Bear in mind that if you want to drive this size of vehicle professionally you will also need to pass the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence but we can provide a training package for you which covers both the C1 licence and the CPC requirements.

You can find out more about the exact CPC requirements here, or call one of our advisers who can tell you what you need to do.

What will you get from doing this training?

Once you have completed this training, you will be fully skilled and legally compliant to drive any vehicle that doesn’t carry passengers, and weighs between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes. You need to remember that the weight limit applies to when the vehicle is fully laden, so if you have a horsebox, your horse’s weight counts too.

How much will it cost?

A five day course which will give you the skills you need to extend your driving licence to include a C1 class category, starts at around £1,000. Remember, we can also create a complete training package for you to include the CPC requirements if you are planning to drive this type of vehicle on a professional basis.
